Ferrari President, Luca di Montezemolo revealed, at the annual Ferrari end of year media conference, that 2008 has been the best year on record for the world’s most revered performance car brand. Best ever sales, best ever earnings and best ever profits. It’s performance in the motorsport arena wasn’t all that bad either.
“Enzo Ferrari said to me in the 1970′s fuel crisis we’d always find 1,500 people crazy enough to buy a Ferrari. Adjusting the numbers for 2009, I think that we’ll continue to find 6,000 people crazy enough to buy a Ferrari!” explained Mr. Montezemolo, who is also the chairman of the FIAT Group. “But in the Group as a whole, we’re holding back launching cars already developed for better times. But we’ll definitely launch the Fiat 500 Cabrio and the Alfa Romeo 149 in 2009,” he added.
“We started the year off strong and if it hadn’t been for the financial crunch even FIAT would have seen its best year ever,” he said.
Standing next to another auto company executive, Montezemolo said a short slump might be a good thing.
“This could be beneficial and allow for some market housecleaning,” he said. “There are too many producers in the automotive sector.”
“But, if it extends into the second half of next year, then we all suffer,” he said.
