The track-focused version of Ferrari’s 599 Fiorano, the 599XX, has been spied testing at the Fiorano test track.

The 599XX gets a retuned version of the 599′s V12 engine, with its rev limit boosted to 9000 rpm and its weight reduced by the adoption of a new crankshaft and more extensive use of carbonfiber in auxiliary parts.

Although confirmed details are scarce, Ferrari says it “achieved its goal” of just under 700 bhp at 9000 rpm.

The power is transmitted through a new version of Ferrari’s robotized manual gearbox that features shift times of just 60 ms. Ferrari claims that the 599XX can lap its Fiorano test track in 1 m 17 sec, less than a second off the time of the Enzo-based FXX that it will replace.

Notable differences from the concept version Ferrari unveiled at the Geneva International Auto Show last March include changes to the air inlets and outlets as well as the rear wing. Other obvious external alterations are a variety of carbonfiber additions, including a small roof spoiler, carbonfiber brake disc covers and an enormous carbonfiber undertray and rear diffuser.

Inside, the cabin has been stripped out to race specification, with a bare dashboard and carbonfiber cladding. It does feature a display screen, however; it’s used by Ferrari’s “virtual car engineer,” which provides instantaneous data on the vehicle’s efficiency.

Details on performance remain few, but the 599XX will be top Ferrari performer, no doubt. It will come with a full slate of F1 derived technologies, including something called “High Performance Dynamic Concept,” which is an electronic control system that maximizes the car’s mechanical potential in achieving lap times on the track.

The 599XX will also come with some  highly advanced aerodynamics, including a system Ferrari calls “Actiflow,” to provide downforce on the 599XX at the rate of 616 lb (280 kg) at 124 mph (200km/h) and 1,386 lb (630 kg) at 186 mph (300 km/h).

The 599XX replaces the FXX as the customer-owned testbed for Ferrari’s engineers. Buyers drawn from Ferrari’s most valued customer base will only be able to drive the car at Ferrari-nominated track days in 2010 and 2011.
