It has been confirmed by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo that his company is testing a 599-based prototype vehicle with a hybrid drivetrain. The technology will be borrowed from F1 for future models. Ferrari plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2012. The company is also believed to be considering turbocharged six-cylinder engines as a short-term solution to its efficiency goals. The hybrid car would fundamentally be a Ferrari in terms of driving pleasure, experience and performance.
Montezemolo added: “We are currently working on the development of a Ferrari that will use alternative energy sources and which will be based on what we are doing at the moment in Formula One.”
He said however that a possible result of these technologies is still years away.
