Ferrari 599XX details are revealed at Geneva

This is the Ferrari 599XX concept. The prototype is based on the 599 GTB Fiorano and uses several new technologies to make it the ultimate performance-oriented track car.

The Ferrari engineers tackled the weight of the engine unit and its components with internals made from classified materials. They made use of carbon-fiber intake plenums, and used new designs on parts like the crankshaft to reduce the amount of material needed. The combustion chambers and airflow systems have also been redone to increase it to 9,000 rpm. All the improvements to the engine helped boost power up to 700 hp.

They also designed a new electronic system, called the “High Performance Dynamic Concept.” This is meant to get the car’s full potential by “managing the combination of the car’s mechanical limits with the potential of it’s electronic controls.” Essentially, this has the full mechanics working in tandem with the electrics to get the best possible lap times whenever the car is on the track.

Handling is optimized with a second-generation Magnetorheaological Suspension Control system that adjusts damping in accordance to road conditions and driver inputs while custom slick tires increase stability in the corners. Meanwhile, a new video panel, called the “virtual car engineer,” provides real-time information on the car’s efficiency. F1-style “doughnuts” partially cover the brake discs and 19 inch wheel rims, which keeps the brakes cool while improving aerodynamics. Brake performance is upgraded with a carbon-ceramic brake system that allows for smaller and lighter calipers.

Aerodynamics in general were improved. The 599XX generates 616 lbs (280 kg) of downforce at 124 mph (200 km/h), and 1,386 lbs (630 kg) at 186 mph (300 km/h). Vents that move hot air out of the engine bay was moved to the front, as the underside of the front is entirely closed off. They have also created an “Actiflow” system to increase downforce and cut drag. This is done by the use of a porous material in the diffuser and two fans that are mounted in the trunk to direct air from beneath the car and out through the grilles next to the tail lamps. Two wings are attached to the sides of the C-pillar while synthetic jets have been incorporated into the rear of the car to control, and smooth the airflow and reduce drag.

Only 20 or 30 599XXs are expected to be built and they will only be offered to a select group of Ferrari owners. Included in the purchase of the car will be dedicated track time and events. If you are lucky enough to get a call from Maranello about one of these, make sure to have at least $1.2 million (1.1 million euros) on hand.
