Ferrari plans to create an exclusive club for collectors

If the other members of your Ferrari owner’s club are simply too common for your posh, multi-million dollar Ferrari tastes, then you maybe in luck. Ferrari is reportedly looking at creating a club specifically for collectors, which could offer members the chance to buy limited-edition Ferrari models before the less rich masses can get their hands on them. How do you join this ultra-exclusive club? Just show your Ferrari collection at the door.

The idea for the new club came after the launch of the limited-edition roadster version of the 599 GTB — the SA Aperta — last year, which had a slim production run of just 80 units at a cost of about $545,000 each. Apparently several top Ferrari enthusiasts and collectors were left out in the cold and were unable to secure one of the 80 cars, which were built to celebrate 80 years of Italian design house Pininfarina. To address this problem, Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo is considering giving club members first refusal on special Ferrari models.

“I don’t want our faithful collectors to miss the opportunity to buy one of our special series,” Montezemolo told Automotive News in an interview.

Exclusivity when it comes to luxury cars isn’t particularly uncommon — Bugatti, for example, is thought to have a waiting list of over a year and has been known to see customers by appointment only — but automakers rarely discuss it openly.

The club will likely require members to own five or more Ferrari models. Though that may sound like a very small minority, Ferrari says there are about 300 collectors worldwide that would qualify for membership. The club would be even more exclusive than the existing Ferrari owner’s clubs, which are made up of about 13,000 members in more than 30 countries. Those clubs are very active, keeping members busy with track days, concours events, gala dinners, and various charity outings.

To further enrich the Ferrari ownership experience, Montezemolo is also planning an annual sightseeing and driving event for collectors. Called the “Ferrari Cavalcade,” this once-a-year pilgrimage is meant to offer Ferrari owners a better understanding of the cars and the country that builds them by taking enthusiasts to different regions of Italy each year beginning next spring. A total of 120 spots will be available on the tour, with a certain number allocated to each market. Ferrari owners will get to explore Italian back roads, and also get the chance to drive Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in Maranello as well as Florence’s historic race track il Mugello.

2012 Ferrari FF shows up at Chicago showrooms

Ferrari brought its successor to the 612 Scaglietti, the all-wheel-drive FF hatchback, to Chicago last week as part of a national roadshow. Of Ferrari’s 36 U.S. retailers, the city has two — Lake Forest Sportscars and Continental AutoSports — and each will receive maybe two FFs to deliver at the tail end of the year, Lake Forest general manager Dan Carver said. The Italian brand’s flagship, the 660-horsepower FF will find perhaps 200 U.S. owners in 2012. Ferrari’s best-selling California sales “easily triple that,” Carver said.

Not far from Cars.com headquarters, we checked out the four-seat FF. When it debuted last January, the hatchback’s profile irritated enthusiasts, but Ferrari defends its practicality. A nine-year project, the car resulted from Ferrari wanting something that could accommodate four adults and their luggage for a weekend trip while still lapping the automaker’s Fiorano circuit in respectable time. In fact, the FF is “as fast around Fiorano as the 599″ GTB, presenter Paul Gerrard said.

The car’s nose, whose headlights resemble the 458 Italia, gives way to a profile similar to BMW’s onetime Z4 coupe. The roofline hangs high until just ahead of the rear window, lending decent backseat headroom. Not that it’s spacious back there.

Well, maybe for contortionists: Adults in the second row will have to straddle the front seats with their legs, and the tightly bound front seatbacks make for a hard saddle. Worse confines exist, but as backseats go, the FF is no sedan substitute.

Not that anyone will care. Aside from an old-school Chrysler navigation unit — Fiat owns both brands — cabin materials impress. Less Spartan than the 599 and 458, the FF’s interior has carbon fiber and leather aplenty, and the seats feel more accommodating than the Ferrari norm. Inherent of a hatchback, the cargo area is spacious — enough for two sets of golf clubs or luggage for four, Gerrard said. Above them sits a tonneau cover; fittingly, it’s also wrapped in cowhide.

Video: Ferrari 458 Challenge caught on public street and track

Here’s a video of a Ferrari 458 Challenge caught in the raw doing some testing around the Ferrari headquarters and on the track at Fiorano.

The only soundtrack is that of the 458 Challenge doing its usual growling as it tests its mettle both on the streets and on the Fiorano circuit.

The 458 Challenge is a racer based on the 458 Italia built for Ferrari’s single-racing series. It features a 4499cc V8 engine producing 570 PS (562 hp / 419 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque coupled to a modified dual-clutch gearbox with ‘F1-Trac’ (traction control) for wet and dry conditions. The 458 Challenge laps the Fiorano test track in 1 minute and 16.5 seconds.

The car also comes with a race suspension featuring solid aluminum bushings, stiffer springs, and single-rate dampers, the same Brembo CCM2 brakes from the 599XX and 19-inch wheels fitted with Pirelli tires. Weight on the 458 is reduced by means of thinner body panels, carbon fiber components and Lexan windows.

Video: Ferrari 599 replacement spied testing on track

A FerrariChat member caught what looks to be Ferrari’s 599 GTB Fiorano update being flogged on, you guessed it, the Fiorano test track. Is it the next 599, or the first look at the upcoming 599 hybrid?

Word is Ferrari doesn’t plan on replacing the 599 before 2015, so whatever’s happening here is likely more focused mule-testing than a new vehicle in the hunt. The mule apparently has Ferrari’s DCT transmission attached, and a deeper, more bollocks-y exhaust note than a run-of-the-mill 599.

It’s not unlikely that this could be a test vehicle for Ferrari’s upcoming production KERS energy-recovery system, shown this past year at the Geneva International Motor Show as the HY-KERS hybrid concept. At the time, CEO Luca de Montezemolo said a hybrid version of the 599 was in play for future release.

FerrariChat member Marchettino, who took the video, also notes the test car sports a new extractor and raw rear and front air intakes, inside which, if you look closely, you can see inside some red LEDs or something.

Ferrari 458 GTC unleashed onto Fiorano race track

The car that was introduced a few days ago as the GT2 version of the Ferrari 458 Italia, has been revealed by the company as the Ferrari 458 GTC. Here is a few shots from the car’s first shakedown at the Fiorano test track, as it’s being prepared to take on Porsche, Aston Martin, Corvette and all the other names in different GT series next year.

A week after the official launch of the 458 Challenge at the Bologna Motor Show on December 2nd, the Maranello carmaker released just one image of its latest sports racer. The Italian automaker and racing team have now released a set of four additional shots.

Ferrari has revealed that the reins of the car were given to Jaime Melo, the Brazilian driver who competed in the ALMS this year with team Risi Competizione. He also teamed up with Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander in the AF Corse squad’s F430 GT2 to bring in the Constructors’ title in the 2010 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

“We are pleased with the impression that engineers and drivers have expressed their vehicles. Thanks to the favorable weather of these last two days it was possible to collect more data than previous sessions, conducted in conditions of snow and rain conditions. We will continue with development work in the winter months, culminating with the debut of the car in the 12 Hours of Sebring , the first round of the American Le Mans Series,“ said Antonello Coletta, head of Ferrari Corse Clienti department.

The Ferrari 458 GTC is said to be limited to 470 hp because of Automobile Club de l’Ouest regulations. This is 100 horsepower less than the 458 Italia street car and 30 less horsepower than the Ferrari F430 GT2. Weight is down to 2,745 pounds (1,245 kg) but up 60 pounds (27 kg) from the old F430 GT2 it replaces. The standard seven-speed DCT gearbox is replaced with a six-speed SMG unit, while the wheels are downsized from 20 to 18 inches.

The Ferrari 458 GTC is expected to cost €480,000 excluding VAT.

458 GTC takes its first steps at Fiorano

Maranello, 10 December 2010 –A few days after the official launch of the 458 Challenge at the Bologna Motor Show on 2 December, today saw the end of a two day shakedown carried out by Ferrari at Fiorano of the 458 GTC, the latest jewel to emerge from Maranello, which will be taking on the opposition in the most important GT races at international level.

The car’s development on track has been entrusted to Jaime Melo, the Brazilian who competed in this year’s American Le Mans Series with the Risi Competizione team. He also teamed up with Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander in the AF Corse squad’s F430 GT2 to bring the Prancing Horse the Constructors’ title in the 2010 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

Antonello Coletta, head of the Ferrari Corse Clienti Department had this to say about the initial testing of the 458 GTC: “We are pleased with the feedback we have had from the engineers and drivers about the car.” Development is in its initial stages and this is just the third test the car has undergone at Fiorano. “Thanks to the good weather these past two day, it has been possible to gather more data than in previous sessions, which were run in snowy and rainy conditions.”

The next step? “We will continue development over the winter months, which will culminate in the car’s debut in the Sebring 12 Hours, the famous endurance race and the first race in next season’s American Le Mans Series.”

Video: Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo driving new Lancia Stratos

This is the President of Ferrari Luca di Montezemolo test driving the new Stratos for the first time on Ferrari’s own test track Fiorano. He liked it so much he signed it!

The new one off model had been commissioned to Pininfarina by Michael Stoschek for himself and his son, Maximilian. This model designed in 2010 is exclusive and unique. A new, modern Stratos is being designed for 2011, in tandem with the 40th anniversary of the original model. The car will use the 4.3L V8 engine currently used in the Ferrari 430 Scuderia. The car’s body panels are speculated to be carbon fibre. It is further speculated that this car will enjoy a limited-production run.

The Stratos was a very successful rally car during the 1970s and early 1980s. It started a new era in rallying as it was the first car designed from scratch for this kind of competition. The three leading men behind the entire rallying project were Lancia team manager Cesare Fiorio, British racer/engineer Mike Parkes and factory rally driver Sandro Munari.

The bodywork was designed by Marcello Gandini, head designer at Bertone, and the technical layout was loosely based on a (Lancia Fulvia V4 powered) concept car called Stratos Zero which had been first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1970. The body was wedge-shaped, and unusually short and wide, providing maximum traction. The car later appeared in Michael Jackson’s 1988 film, Moonwalker as well as in his music video for Smooth Criminal.

The car won the 1974, 1975 and 1976 championship titles in the hands of Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård, and might have gone on to win more had not internal politics within the Fiat group placed rallying responsibility on the Fiat 131 Abarths. As well as victories on the 1975, 1976 and 1977 Monte Carlo Rally, all courtesy of Munari, the Stratos won the event with the private Chardonnet Team as late as 1979.

Automobile design consultant Chris Hrabalek has the largest Lancia Stratos Collection in the world – he owns 11 unique Lancia Stratos cars, including the fluorescent red 1971 factory prototype and the 1977 Safari Rally car.

Lancia Automobiles S.p.A. revealed the technical specs and the performance stats of the all new Lancia Stratos. The new super car sits on a 20 cm shortened Ferrari F430 Scuderia underpinning and measures 4181 mm in length, 1971 mm in width, 1240 mm in height with a 2400 mm wheelbase.

The New Lancia Stratos, which has a dry weight of 1247 kg, is expected to reach 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds and with a top speed of 274 km/h. The company said it has reduced the top speed due to the use of a new rear axle.

The super car from the Italian automaker is powered using a 4.3L V8 engine that can generate a power of 540-hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The new car comes with a 6 speed sequential gearbox with mechanical variable differential.

The fast moving car is stopped using a 398 mm front and 350 mm rear Brembo brakes. When it comes to controlling the vehicle, the car has an electro-hydraulic power steering pump with the new carbon steering wheel with multicolored LEDs. The Italian carmaker has equipped this super car with two outboard aluminium fuel tanks, which has a capacity of 90 liters.

Apart from these features and specifications this super car comes with various other accessories, These accessories include bi-xenon headlights, LED-Ferrari 599 rear lights, one blade front wiper system, electric switch and side indicator, lightweight regulator with anti-trap technology (Brose) and 3.76 mm and 4 mm thin window glass.

Ferrari 458 Italia revealed at 2010 Bologna Motor Show

The 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia is undoubtedly a superb car, and while it can hold its own on a closed circuit, the car is primarily intended for on-road use. For those seeking to leverage the 458′s performance prowess primarily as a track toy, Ferrari has a solution: the 2011 458 Challenge, which was unveiled this morning at the 2010 Bologna Motor Show.

As has previously been the case with previous Challenge-spec forms of its mid-engine sports cars (i.e. F355 Challenge, 360 Challenge, F430 Challenge, etc.), the race-spec 458 is built specifically for the one-make Ferrari Challenge race series. Although the car and its spec sheet echo that of the standard road-going 458, there are a few key differences that help prepare the Challenge for sustained track abuse.

The 458 Challenge continues to utilize the exact same 570-horsepower, 4.5-liter V-8 as its consumer-biased cousin, but engineers did tweak the gear ratios within the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing torque to be delivered lower in the power band. We imagine acceleration times will also be lower than those of the stock car, seeing as Ferrari’s put the car on a crash diet. Along with stripping the cabin of all non-essential components, the automaker has increased the number of carbon fiber panels used in the body structure, along with fabricating all windows from Lexan composite.

Like its predecessors, the 458 Challenge receives a new suspension setup; engineers gifted the car with adjustable dampers and stiffer springs at all four corners, while simultaneously lowering the ride height by 1.9 inches. Brembo-sourced carbon ceramic brakes are fitted as standard equipment, along with new 19-inch, center-lug wheels wrapped in R-compound Pirelli rubber. According to Ferrari, the modifications allow the Challenge to pull an organ-smashing 1.6 lateral g on the company’s skidpad.

Previous Challenge cars were stripped of the advanced traction control and launch systems found in their street-legal counterparts, but that isn’t the case here. Instead, the 458 Italia receives a form of the automaker’s trick traction control system, which was derived from its F1 race cars. Three user-selectable settings can be triggered from the steering wheel; levels one and two offer varying levels of assistance, but those with considerable race experience (or sheer bravado) can completely defeat the system altogether.

Ferrari has yet to announce any additional performance metrics for the 458 Challenge, but did note the car can lap its Fiorano test track in 1:16.5, roughly two seconds quicker than a normal 458 Italia. Production of 458 Challenge models is expected to be quite limited, and each will likely command a significant premium over the 458 Italia’s $230,000 price tag.

This mid-rear V8 berlinetta is derived from the 458 Italia and is the fifth model used by Ferrari in its single-series racing programme. The latter is currently split into Italian, European and North American championships which will be flanked next year by the new Asia-Pacific series. With the new 458 Challenge, Ferrari puts an exceptional combination of extreme performance, superb fun behind the wheel and unique driving emotions at the finger-tips of its sporting, professional and gentleman-driver clients.

Also on the stand is the F430 GTC owned by the AF Corse team, one of the cars with which the Maranello marque won the Constructors’ title in the GT2 class of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup 2010.

The Prancing Horse’s line-up of track models is completed by the FXX and 599XX laboratory cars, each of which has its own eponymous research and development programme involving in-depth collaboration between Ferrari technicians and our client test-drivers. At the very centre of the stand is the F60, the single-seater the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro fielded in the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship season.

A rich and varied programme is planned for the competition arena in Area 48 with the classic end-of-year battle between the drivers of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, now in its 18th season, dominating the action. No less than 16 cars from the Italian and European series will be taking each other on in a three-round competition on Wednesday, December 8th. However, the high point of the programme will be the Formula 1 exhibition with which Luca Badoer will bring his extraordinary 13-year career as the Scuderia Ferrari’s official test-driver to an end. He’ll put an F60 through its paces and a simulated pit-stop, as a farewell homage to the tifosi and enthusiasts present.

458 CHALLENGE

Compared to the 458 Italia, the direct injection 4499 cc V8 remains strictly in production tune, with an output of 570 hp at 9,000 rpm. That said, modifications have been made to the gear ratios and calibration of its dual-clutch F1 gearbox to guarantee higher torque at lower revs. The 458 Challenge is also equipped with the E-Diff electronic differential already employed on the road-going version, a first for Ferrari’s track-only cars.

Significant work has also gone into cutting the car’s weight. This focused on both the exterior and interior with Ferrari’s engineers concentrating in particular on reducing the thickness of the bodyshell panels and on using lightweight materials, such as carbon-fibre and Lexan.

The new 458 Challenge also has a specific suspension set-up with steel uniball joints, stiffer springs, single-rate alloy dampers, centre-nut 19″ forged rims, larger dimension Pirelli slicks and a ride height lowered by 50mm all round. It is also equipped with the new generation Brembo CCM2 brakes integrated with the latest ABS system which debuted on the 599XX, Ferrari’s extreme experimental laboratory car.

Another first for a Ferrari Challenge model is the adoption of the F1-Trac traction control system, the most sophisticated of its kind. Developed in-house by Ferrari, the F1-Trac system constantly monitors levels of grip for maximum high-performance road-holding. Two specific track-biased calibrations have been developed for this application, with control logics and strategies derived from Ferrari’s extensive racing experience in the F1 and GT championships. The F1-Trac is completely integrated with the E-Diff to guarantee maximum stability and acceleration both into and out of corners.

The ABS/EBD, F1-Trac and E-Diff calibration settings are selected via the manettino on the steering wheel, the first time this solution has been adopted on a model developed for the Ferrari Challenge series. The driver has a choice of three configurations: OFF position (traction control deactivated), position 1 and position 2. The latter two settings have progressively higher levels of control system intervention and are selected in accordance with grip conditions on the track.

In the course of the intensive development sessions involved in honing the 458 Challenge for the track, the engineers also managed to improve the car’s lap time at Fiorano by two seconds over that of its predecessor, resulting in a new record of just 1’16.5″. Equally impressive is the amount of lateral grip the new car generates – up to 1.6G.

Maranello, 2nd December – Ferrari makes a different contribution to the 35th edition of the Bologna Motor Show with a stand devoted entirely to its racing activities plus an intense track programme.

Spy Video: Ferrari 612 Scaglietti test mule

A new 2012 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti spy video has surfaced on the web as a prototype/mule was spotted doing test laps around the Fiorano race track in Italy. Early indications say the next generation 2012 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti will be powered by a brand new V-12 engine equipped with direct fuel injection. The new mill is tipped to have 40 percent fewer carbon-dioxide emissions than the current one in the Scaglietti, which would fit Ferrari’s internal goal of reducing its emissions and fuel-consumption by that same amount by 2012. At the moment , it’s too early to speculate on the power output and performance figures of the 2012 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.

The 2012 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti prototype you see in this video does not resemble the real car, which will be premiered in March 2011. What you see is merely a skin to disguise the real 2012 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. You should notice the realigned, oversized exhaust pipes, the extended front end, the longer wheelbase and what appears to be a huge air scoop on the hood.

With only a small selection of photos available, we’re certain you haven’t seen enough of the Ferrari 458 Challenge and so we’re excited to bring you several minutes of video of the newest Ferrari racer.

According to Ferrari the new 458 Challenge weighs significantly less than the production model, although specific numbers have not been given. In addition, this race car gets aluminum bushings, stiffer springs that lower the car by 30mm, 19-inch racing wheels and wider Pirelli racing slicks. Ferrari claims it’s capable of 1.6 Gs of lateral acceleration. Also included are a new generation of Brembo carbon ceramic brakes (called CCM2), that first debuted on the 599XX.

And for the first time on a Ferrari Challenge car, the Prancing Horse has decided to equip its gentleman racers with traction control. The F1-Trac system constantly monitors grip to deliver the most power possible, with a dry track and wet track setting. And because these are real Ferrari race cars, drivers can also opt for CT-OFF on the steering wheel-mounted manettino to completely shut off the TC system.

Compared to the F430 Challenge car, Ferrari claims the 458 Challenge is two seconds a lap faster on its Fiorano test circuit, setting a new record time of 1:16.5.

The 458 Challenge will run alongside its 430 Challenge predecessor in the 2011 Series, while the latter is phased out. Ferrari also plans to expand its Ferrari Challenge series next year, adding a new series in the Asia-Pacific region.

The latest episode of Fifth Gear brings a new review of the Ferrari 599 GTO. This time, the Ferrari 599 GTO gets tested both on and off, but mostly on, the Fiorano race track by WTCC champion Jason Plato. The hardcore Ferrari 599 GTO hides under its red skin a V12 engine good for 670 hp (500 kW) and 620 Nm (457 lb ft)of torque. Apart from having obscene amounts of power, the Ferrari 599 GTO also has a relatively low weight of just 3289 lb (1495 kg). The Ferrari 599 GTO can rocket from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.3 seconds and to 124 mph (200 km/h) in less than 10 seconds.
