Just a few weeks ago, it was rumored that Ferrari was working on a special edition 599 bearing the name of the great Fernando Alonso.  That may still be the case, but if that model does come along, it will be paired with the sports car in these new spy shots.  Apparently, Ferrari has developed a special lightweight 599XX EVO just as the original Ferrari Enzo-based FXX experimental supercar had its more extreme FXX Evolution variant.

Taken during the Finali Mondiali event held in Italy, the spy shots depict a 599XX Evolution, or ‘Evoluzione’ as it’s labeled by Ferrari, being prepped before deliveries start to select customers as part of the ongoing Ferrari Corse Clienti (race clients) program.

The program essentially enlists the help of dedicated Ferrari customers who enjoy taking their supercars to the track and provide feedback to Ferrari’s engineering team. Not only does Ferrari organize a number of track day events around the globe for its clients, the automaker also supplies pit crews and technicians to tend to each of the cars.

Unlike the current 599XX, the new 599XX Evo is expected to feature a more powerful version of the latest 6.3-liter V-12 found in the FF and destined to power the 599’s successor–possibly with as much as 800 horsepower on tap.

We can also see plenty of aerodynamic enhancements, including winglets similar to the units seen of Ferrari’s Formula 1 car. In addition to these, there’s a large rear wing, electronic upgrades, uprated brakes and what appear to be new side vented exhaust tips.

You may recall that the current 599XX was the first production-derived car to have broken the seven minute barrier for a lap of the Nurburgring-Nordschleife, posting a time of 6:58.16 earlier this year. You can bet that this latest version will be even quicker, and you can also bet that many of its technologies will appear on the new GT scheduled to replace the 599 next year.

The new Ferrari 599XX Evo will probably make its official debut in March at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned!

Although there is no shortage of expensive and exotic cars on Ebay, there is always something a little funny about ultra rare and exclusive vehicles being offered alongside 14 year old Honda Civics. When it comes to exotic cars, few are more exclusive than the Ferrari FXX seen here, especially considering the fact this one has only traveled a mere 7 miles.

How you end up one of the few people to have the chance at buying a Ferrari FXX is almost as hard to understand as putting only 7 miles on the car once you have it. We know FXXs aren’t street legal and we know Ferrari kept and maintained the cars and brought them only to approved track days. What we don’t know is how you resist the urge to go thrash the car at a track day at least once after spending nearly two million dollars buying one.

Either way it means someone that didn’t make Ferrari’s exclusive list the first time around has a chance to buy a “brand new” FXX. Not surprisingly that opportunity doesn’t come cheap. According to an image from Ebay, the 11th FXX built is currently valued around 9 million dollars. We don’t know where the reserve on this car lies, and we probably won’t find out. With less than three days left, no one has gone for the $1.5 million dollar opening bid.

2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione

There are only a few cars whose residual value goes up in time, just like a good wine, and most of them are Ferraris. This is, at least, what a colleague of ours likes to say, and his saying has been once again proved right by an auction held by Gooding & Company in Arizona.

The car that managed to fuel the ego of our colleague is a 2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione, a jewel which was able to snatch $2.1 million and climb at the top of the list of rare cars sold in Scottsdale.

The model is powered by a 6.3l V12 engine good for 859 hp and it promises to get its new owner to new speed limits: 400km/h (248.5) mph. Even at that high speed, the vehicle would be very noticeable, as it is one of only 30 units ever manufactured by the Italian geniuses.

But the FXX was not the only car worth spending a whole lot of money. The worst seller in the top ten cars sold at the auction, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, snatched a remarkable $1,155,000, making David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company, say that “strong 2011 auction sales will result from an increasing demand for preservation-class quality cars.”

Gooding & Company announced it will be selling Benny Caiola’s private collection at its Scottsdale Arizona auction.

Caiola was a philanthropist, real estate mogul and Ferrari collector who made such friends as Enzo Ferrari, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo(chairman of Ferrari), Formula One driver Michael Schumacher and Italian automaker Horacio Pagani.

Caiola collected Italian supercars and prototype automobiles.

“Designed especially for a select few of Ferrari-Maserati’s best clients, three highlights include a 2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione, one of 30 FXX examples of Ferrari’s most advanced production car ever created; a 2005 Maserati MC 12 purchased direct from the factory, the 31st car of 50 built; and a 1999 Ferrari 333 SP, an unmodified example of the manufacturer’s last sports racing prototype.”-From Gooding & Co press release.

Ferrari has stumbled upon one heck of a formula with its XX development programs. They’ve found that their most wealthy clients aren’t just willing to help Maranello develop new components for future supercars, they’re actually willing to pay for the privilege. And pay big, too-as in $2 million big.

The program started with the Enzo-based FXX, evolved with the FXX Evoluzione, and carries on with the Fiorano-based 599XX. So what’s next up Ferrari’s sleeve? A 458XX wouldn’t be too far off the mark.

If the outgoing lineup (and those that came before) can serve as any indication, the new mid-engined V8 sports car is poised to spawn numerous variations, including the requisite Spider, a new Challenge-spec racer, a replacement for the existing F430 GT2, a stripped-down successor to the 360 CS and 430 Scuderia, and, if this speculative rendering from Luxury4Play has its way, a 458XX as well. If and when it does come along, we’d expect it to look something along these lines.
